Christmas Scrapbook Project: Photo Soap

by Christine on December 9th, 2006

Have you thought about turning a gorgeous photo into a photo soap? Weird but I like it!

Supplies: Glycerin soap, soap molds, stickers, photos

Yes…you read right…photo soap! It’s a totally wacky idea, but novel enough to make a fun little extra gift. Take glycerin soap blocks, melt down in an oven safe container at 300 degrees. The container might say to melt in the microwave, but I found that this resulted in more air bubbles in the finished product. Pour melted soap to the halfway point in the mold. The surface will immediately start to film over. Place a wallet-sized photo on the surface and allow soap to harden. If you are worried about ink bleeding from your home printers, “laminate” the photo between two layers of clear packing tape. Pour remaining soap to the top of the mold once the original layer has hardened. Your photo will be suspended in the middle! Use as you would any other bar of soap, throwing away when the photo gets to the surface. This is meant to be amusing, not a long term keepsake. Experiment with scents, soap coloring and enclosures (Christmas stickers for the holidays, or bath photos for kids). Watch your friends laugh when they unwrap. It might reconfirm in their eyes that you are a crazy photo crafting lady, but at least they’ll think of you whenever they wash their hands.

I *love* that! It reminds me of when my mother used to decorate bars of soap with decals for different holidays :-)

This is a totally awesome gift idea. I don’t know where you get all your idea but keep em coming!

I mae the photo soap but what am I doing wrong as even when the soap has hardened and dries it feels wet? I melt it in the microwave add a little fragrance and follow your instructions.
But I made a bar last night and left it on the table and it feels wet. Thanks.
