Celebrat 4th of July at b5media Lifestyles Channel with Blast from the Past

While the writers of the b5media Lifestyles Channel may be scattered about globally, one thing we all have in common is a celebration of fireworks.  Whether it’s the U.S. and our Fourth of July - or a very different kind of holiday in Perth - we all know the unique smell that penetrates the air and the sense of freedom the mere sound of them instill.  There is truly something so divine about a celebration of fireworks - they do create some of the most treasured memories.

Over here at Mad Cropper remembers Guy Fawkes Day, a day celebrated in New Zealand with lots of fireworks. Find out why Guy Fawkes is celebrated by the English and most commonwealth countries. It is indeed a blast from the past!

Chloe of Tangled Thread shares a few festive fireworks and needlework patterns.

Kerri and Cory at Marriage Actually talk about why having a shared past is one of the best parts about being married.

Heather at A Creative Journal shares her first memory of firecrackers with a view from Australia.

Mary Emma at Quilting and Patchwork, provides a quiz for her readers.  See how many of the quilt designs you can connect with historical Americana - events, objects or people.

Marye at Baking Delights reflects on just how much menu’s have changed over the years while at Kettle and Cup she shares a modern twist that many are sure to love with her Non-Alcoholic Long Island Iced Tea

Kelly Saunders at Thrifty Mommy shares her favorite 4th of July memory - I just can’t spoil the surprise - check it out.camp-weary-parent-125

Char and Christine continue Camp Weary Parent with this weeks Patriotic activities:  Star Spangled Rocket and a week full of other fun projects

Marcie and Mary Emma are blasting through books with Fourth of July and summer recommendations at One Book Two Book. Make sure to check out Fourth of July Books for Teens and The 10 Best Fourth of July Picture Books

Linette at Robust Cooking shares 10 Healthy 4th of July Dessert Ideas.  At Mother Earth’s Garden she calls out the old saying about corn - “Knee high by the fourth of July.”  At She Knows Parties, she shares fond memories of her summers and holidays as a child.

Karen at Thrifty Mommy probably has the most reason to celebrate the fourth as anyone I’ve heard - join Karen as she shares family photos of one of the most memorable nights in her families lives.

Christina at SoloMother shares her own experiences of celebrating the 4th of July in the nations capital.

Susan at PlayLibrary shares her memories of playing the classic game of Zimm Zamm during her family’s annual July 4th barbecue celebration.

Eliza at Babylune reflects back on early holiday celebrations with baby on board and looks to this years celebration - their first out of the military.

And finally, there’s Gayla at MomGadget - Without fail, each year her memories race back to an earlier time when life was much simpler and she’d celebrate her summer holiday with relatives down in the holler in the hills of Kentucky - this year - she shares a Bluegrass Kinda Fourth of July.

To all our readers in the U.S. - we wish you the happiest and safest of holidays - and everyone else, thanks for allowing us to share our own memories with each of you.

Starting the month of July 2008, Mad Cropper will be hosting a contest or challenge.

The very first Layout contest that Mad Cropper is sponsoring is:

“Fireworks Layout Challenge”

In honor of USA’s 4th July holiday, Mad Cropper is looking for scrapbook layouts involving fireworks — it can be single or multiple photos featuring a holiday or a vacation or memory that you have had that involves fireworks + journalling.

The Prize is a $25 gift certificate or voucher from an online scrapbook store of your choice.

Contest guidelines:

1) Create a scrapbook layout with the designated theme for the month (see above)

2) Post the layout in your blog (if you have one) plus the journalling text and link back using the comments section of this entry. If you do not have a blog, submit your entry to christine(at)b5media(dot)com. I will only accept layouts in jpeg format with a size below 200kb. Please submit the text of your journalling too.

2) The contest is open to all scrappers based anywhere in the world!

4) You can enter as many layouts as you want. Sky’s the limit :-)

Blast from the Past: Fireworks at Guy Fawkes’ Day

Today is the b5media Lifestyle Channel’s Promo Day and our theme this time is “Blast from the Past” celebrating the US 4th July holiday. I am not based in the United States so can’t really share any 4th July experience but I’d like to share a ‘holiday’ in New Zealand where fireworks are involved.

We celebrate Guy Fawkes’ Day with fireworks! For what, you say? For his plot on blowing up a parliament building in the UK. Weird eh? But yes, we celebrate that with fireworks in New Zealand!

According to Wikipedia

Guy Fawkes sometimes known as Guido Fawkes, was a member of a group of Roman Catholic revolutionaries from England who planned to carry out the Gunpowder Plot. He was attempting to overthrow the newly formed protestant ruler who would consolidate quickly and rule for hundreds of years. He planned on blowing up the parliament building to dissolve the regime.

This first happened in 1605 and until now, the UK and most of the commonwealth countries like New Zealand celebrate the day with fireworks. It is at this time where fireworks are sold to consumers like myself :-) So, yes, 400 years on and that day still lives on so it’s indeed a blast from the past! :-)

What about you? Are there any holidays in your country that are celebrated with fireworks?

Mad Cropper’s Random Act of Kindness Contest - Announcing the Winner

I am pleased to announce the winner of Mad Cropper’s Random Act of Kindness Contest. I am sorry for the delay in the selection and announcement of the winner. I had a family emergency that I had to deal with. But we are now back to our regular programming :-)

Michael Mayfield of Eastman Kodak and his team selected the entry of Ann Marie Walker on 18th May:

I nominate my Sister Terri. She has done so many nice things for me and my family. She was never able to have children, and is like the second mother to mine. I know that she is always there for me, and would do anything for me. When we went through a tough time financially, she was right there. She would show up with clothes for my kids, or bags of grocerys. When my daughter was ill, she sat right there beside me all nite in the hospital. She is also a geriatric nurse and gives it her all helping people. I know many of times when she stayed after work, just to hold someone hand while they passed away, so they wouldnt be alone. I’d love to be able to give something back to her. To let her know how much I love her and appreciate her. I just got her hooked on scrapbooking, and this would be wonderful for her. Even if I dont win. I’m happy to be able to post something about how much she means to me.

Michael says it was difficult for them to choose the winning entry as there were so many touching entries and random act of kindness. Thanks to everyone who participated!

Congratulations Ann Marie for winning the contest and to Terri, enjoy your super fabulous Kodak EasyShare Printer 5300 All-in-One Printer with a retail value of $149.99! With this printer, did you know that you 2x more documents and photos compared to other printers out there! A real value for your money!

Ann Marie, I will email you for details on what you should do so that Terri can receive this fantastic prize! Thanks to Eastman Kodak for sponsoring our contest.

We at Making Memories For You are sad to see Karrie leave us as both the DT coordinator and a member of the DT.

Karrie’s son will be starting school full time and she is hoping to get a job out of the home.
With that said she will not have the available time that she has had this past reign.
